   Creating might be the perfect verb to use when thinking about early childhood environments. The word implies a certain amount of forethought and deliberate action, but also a bit of laisez-faire, hope, and sometimes just plain luck. The educator then takes those elements, spins in hard work, a few sleepless nights and some minor artistic angst; perhaps she even closes her eyes and waits for the dust to settle, then breathes in the created environment, one that celebrates each child by saying, "This is YOUR place in the world."
    After a decade in the field, I can reflect on specific ways I work to make sure young children knew they were in the right space, with decisions made based on the developmental needs of the children. I spent a weekend creating collages from family pictures that two-year-olds brought in to the early learning center which housed my first classroom, then hung them at child eye-level, where they became smudged from happy fingerprints. Two-year-olds need to learn that they are separate entities from their families while at the same time understand that their families love them.
    Five-year-olds need a place to practice theories about the world, and to record their findings in a way that makes sense to them. I unapologetically told colleagues that everyone's favorite rolling chalk board was no longer available as it was to define a corner of the library where I taught three Kindergarten students one year; it became a center of patterns, graphing, and other math learning experiences in that make-shift classroom.
    All children need comfort, warmth, a place to rest and a satisfied stomach; if a child's basic physical needs are not met, they are less able to engage in learning about more than, how do I get something to eat? I shipped yards and yards of bright material to the frigid north so that children would come into the classroom and find colorful, comfortable places to cozy into during the long night of winter, and have provided variety of snacks that respect the local customs so that children can be ready for higher level learning.
    Creating a learning environment is about more than just the space, though. The culture of the classroom is perhaps a more important element because space will come and go, but a classroom community can be carried to any location. The community of the classroom includes the expectations that individuals have for each other, the acceptance of those who are different, and the relationships that are built or challenged every day through interactions with each other. The culture of classroom is the attitude of the group, and in my classroom, it is a sense that people matter and ideas are valued.
    I know I have large role in creating the classroom culture; I also know that I am but one individual in the group and so the classroom culture is not limited to what works for me: it must be what works for us. To those ends, I have colorful, student-created "Codes of Cooperation" on each team table in my Elementary reading classroom, group-specific agreements put together so that we can work toward our Shared Vision for why we learn to read.
   The children know that ideas will be heard in the classroom, by myself and by peers, and that those ideas may take on a new life once others collaborate with them. My students also know that they are as responsible for their learning as I am for creating an environment where they can learn through interaction with each other, with ideas, with materials and with themselves. We may appear to have different roles, I as "teacher" and they as "learner" but in my classroom, we are all learners, as indeed, we are in the learning process together.

Why did Jesus fold the linen burial cloth after His resurrection? I never
noticed this....

The Gospel of John (20:7) tells us that the napkin, which was placed over
the face of Jesus, was not just thrown aside like the grave clothes.

The Bible takes an entire verse to tell us that the napkin was neatly
folded, and was placed at the head of that stony coffin.

Early Sunday morning, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the
tomb and found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance.

She ran and found Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus
loved. She said, 'They have taken the Lord's body out of the tomb, and I
don't know where they have put him!'

Peter and the other disciple ran to the tomb to see. The other disciple
outran Peter and got there first. He stooped and looked in and saw the linen
cloth lying there, but he didn't go in.

Then Simon Peter arrived and went inside. He also noticed the linen
wrappings lying there, while the cloth that had covered Jesus' head was
folded up and lying to the side.

Is that important? Absolutely!

Is it really significant? Yes!

In order to understand the significance of the folded napkin, you have to
understand a little bit about Hebrew tradition of that day. The folded
napkin had to do with the Master and Servant, and every Jewish boy knew this
tradition.

When the servant set the dinner table for the master, he made sure that it
was exactly the way the master wanted it.

The table was furnished perfectly, and then the servant would wait, just out
of sight, until the master had finished eating, and the servant would not
dare touch that table, until the master was finished.

Now if the master were done eating, he would rise from the table, wipe his
fingers, his mouth, and clean his beard, and would wad up that napkin and
toss it onto the table.

The servant would then know to clear the table. For in those days, the
wadded napkin meant, 'I'm done'.

But if the master got up from the table, and folded his napkin, and laid it
beside his plate, the servant would not dare touch the table,
because..........

The folded napkin meant, 'I'm coming back!'

it was warm today, mid 30s. had to get goober out of the house. one problem: squeaker. and i can't find the other half of the baby monitor. so i asked myself, what would sarah palin do? she's an outdoorsy kind of woman with five kids.

a bit about life

i've been around the internet this pregnancy (well, not just in pregnancy as you know) and came across my first post of someone thinking about terminating her pregnancy based on prenatal screening and u/s, etc. and it really bugged me. i don't usually think of abortion in that context. i think of it in the first trimester when someone made a poor reproductive choice and is using abortion to 'fix it.'

even with bad news on the prenatal scene (and this news didn't seem particularly bad), who am i to decide to end the life in my body? even if the child wouldn't not be viable outside of my womb, he is viable inside and can have 9 months of life that will bless me and my family and those around. i'm not sure exactly how that would work...as in what those blessings would be...but they would be there. look how our God knows us, really knows us. there's a blessing. even if i never met my son outside of the womb, God knows him. our child who is in heaven, little summer solstice, God knows her though i do not. and that's a blessing to me, He knows not only my name, but hers, and his...

well, not totally lazy. but not overly productive either. i did get some REALLY good feedback on my assignments for my tech class. my kitchen is clean 4 nights in a row. (notice that is 'clean' and not 'uncluttered'.) my daughter is so far cooperative in helping around the house. perhaps we are moving in the correct direction?

and speaking of contained. i had a dream last night that i had a slit on the side of my belly and i could pull the baby out to check on it. it wasn't gross, like a rubber baby doll. then i'd put it back in. i was a bit miffed because the youth pastor at church was trying to talk me into an ultrasound but why did i need one when i could just pull the baby out? warrior did not like that dream. it is kind of creepy. but it beats last pregnancy when i dreamed goober delivered early looking like a baby california condor and we kept her in a take-out box with lettuce and tomato in it. gotta love preggo dreams.

this is almost 20 weeks. i'm going to be huge by the end of this. good thing we have weight watchers in town now.

i'm finding summer a bit odd. i stay up until 2 and sleep until 10. 8 hours of sleep. to my credit, the late night is usually homework...did i mention i'm taking a class called 'technology in instructional design', grad level and A LOT of work? easier to do it in the summer, i think. i may or may not take another in the fall and one in the spring and have a MAT degree. or they'll say, sorry, you can't have the MAT degree the easy way and i'll say, alright, thanks, and not take any classes. i'm good either way, i think.

in the meantime, i just finished a one-credit class (for A LOT less than graduate credits) and will take another this next month. i'm nuts. why so many classes? i need like 45 credits to move up on the pay scale. that is practically 2 degrees. it is because i came in with a master's degree. it will be 10 years until i get to move up.

oh well. move on.

first girls-day-out movie

just got back from a minitrip, and goober and i had our first movie together. we've been to ones with warrior, but this was a girl thing. and we watched a very, very girlie movie.

spoilers follow...

goober liked the races. a lot. and the fight scenes, too, she was up out of her seat kicking along. great. but there was only one other party in the theater, so why care, right? well, her emulating ninjas isn't exactly high on my list of role models for her, but oh well. she said the talking was boring, but at least there were several races to keep her (and my) attention.

i had a hormonal momement when they did the death montage for rex racer. i kept watching racer x thinking, he is REALLY familiar. then the mask comes off and look! jack got off the island! i loved all the color, i walked out into my own spring thinking, lame, and i live in a place where color just shouts at you during the summer. it was all good, though. 10:20 in the morning, and we're watching a movie. gotta love the big town. and tell me if i use this right, i loved speed btrwtrhing the establishment.

i need to rant.

i just saw this movie last night, i've read the book...a while ago, but to the film's credit, i still came away with similar impressions about the whole story.

but I tell you what, the two words that we repeatedly said during the movie were 'mentally ill'. i know he thought he was bucking the system, getting off the grid and just existing like those romantics ala thoreau did in the early 1800s, but hello...thoreau went back. thoreau had people checking on him. chris's overgrown sense of self-reliance killed him.

i do think he was happy with most of what he was doing. and the death scene in the flim made it look like that he did die doing what he loved. but I think in the book, he never realized what was killing him. that was a nice hollywood touch that he realized he was doomed. but it was still foolish. hello, thousands of people were a few days hike south of him in denali park. did he plan ahead? of course not. can't be bothered to use a map. but that is nothing new to say about the whole thing.

it just sickens me. what real alaskan in their right mind would do any kind of trip like that without 'filing a flight plan', as we say in our family. (but remember, warrior said, he didn't need anyone else.) i think that is one of the first lessons you learn up here...leave plans, and accept help. alaska will KILL you.

one scene we both liked was when the guy dropped chris off at stampede trail, and gives him his xtra tuffs, and then is like, off you go. as unforgiving as alaska is, i also think that we alaskans will help as much as someone wants help and then if you want to take off and hike to your death, so be it.

we saw similarities in mccandless and tim treadwell, the bear guy. yep, that came up during us watching it. Tte other thing was, hello, make snares out of your shoelaces. you can eat that way. (bear taught me that.)

i guess this is more of a part ramble, part rant. people just don't get alaska. warrior was working at denali park when this happened, and he said when they all got back the next summer, people were talking about some guy who died in a bus near healy, and it was a big head-scratcher for a lot of them. yes, there are a lot of anti-posession, nature-rules people in alaska but most have the sense to understand the magnitude of the land. or they are just enough of this side of sane, or this side of someone-back-home-cares-about-me to not make that hike out unprepared.

okay, i'm done. i need to look for the book to reread it.

on the plus side, i got the movie 'enchanted' for my birthday. and yes, i know, life isn't a fairy tale. but really, more of us need to participate in a musical number on a beautiful day in central park. then maybe we won't need to kill ourselves in the backcountry to prove we aren't of this world.

i just re-read mrs. frisby and the rats of NIMH since it is on the battle of the books list, and as the sponsor of said event at school, it doesn't hurt to read what the kids are reading. i LOVED this book as a child or young adult or whenever i read it. LOVED it. loved justin. hated that he was a rat. hated that his fate is ambiguous at the end. but loved him...this line in particular, as he's rescuing mrs. frisby...

well, imagine the conversation tonight as we're watching adam sandler's 'the longest yard' and warrior is like, isn't that the sexy guy from wrestling, and i'm like, no way, he doesn't look anything like him. but the movie goes on, and warrior keeps saying it, and now we remember it is the big sexy we're talking about. but i'm not convinced and won't be until the credits. they get started and warrior says, what's his name, and i'm like kevin something.

(my boss did just notice my 7 highly qualified certificates. i can take them down now.) we actually have some off-season business in the guesthouse, too. and we updated our driveway with 7 load of pit run and higher quality stuff to top it off. we have a new car, too, an 04 chevy tahoe. sweet! anyhow, that's what's up. more or less. well, really less.

just finished GOF again...it really is a bit of a chore to get through that book. it goes up then down then up then down then up.... well, it isn't really a chore. i don't mean chore like reading pride and prejudice or research journal articles. but it definately my least favorite book of the series. the best thing about it is that OoTP is next. and i like that book. a lot. because i luuuuv sirius. and umbridge is pretty wicked, too. better clean the house before starting the book!

you know, i was making my monthly pass through myspace and thought, wonder how many of the kids at school are on it? well, half of them. with profiles set to public. telling all about stuff i really could care less about, their secret no-adults-allowed lives. saying they're 56 years old and stuff like that, which did crack me up. the only one i clicked on that was private was the girl who left school last year as a senior to move in with her sister and finish school there. which she didn't but what-the-hey...she always seemed more sensible than the rest of the crowd anyway. oh, and the priest's son, his profile is private. go figure.

anyway. then i got all wigged out that they could find out who was looking at them, and they'd call up my private profile and my secret would be out. lol. actually, i state all the time that i love the internet. because i do. but i don't need to waste my time reading pathetic attempts at meaninfulness. (not when there's fanfic to write, ha). and i REALLY don't want to find out who's doing who.

so myspace, you've been great. really. but that's that.

potter on the brain

i had a dream last night. one of you fanfic people need to pick it up, or maybe i should try a go of it in all my free time (school started today!).

so turns out that sirius black had a girlfriend before he was sent to azkaban, isn't that sweet? and she never turned on him, always knew he was innocent. waited for him...but not in a pathetic sort of way. she has this killer right-out-of-sunset-magazine little cabin up in the hills of britain somewhere. well, really, the dream looked like the hills of sierra nevada, but don't get picky on me.

well, anyhow, sirius shows up at her cabin! she's estatic! but he can't change back to human because of course the ministry is watching her. so she makes plans to take him as a dog across the bay to some remote cabin and he can change back to human and they can carry on where they probably left off.

but my question in my dream, where would he sleep before they took off? did he sleep on her bed, at the foot of it like any good dog would? did he get a pillow and was close to her? (don't get too weird about that...you know how people are with their dogs, ours used to sleep between the two of us in our queen bed, if she could!)

i did ponder that as i got ready for work this morning. and wondered, what did sirius look like in his prime? not that gary oldman is high up on my 'sexy man' list--shoot, i don't think he's even on my sexy list--but black is. so imagine a 20 year old cocky animagus with dark, dashing hair, on a flying motorcycle. see, sexy.

so really, where would you have that big shaggy dog sleep?
